Richard Hollis: Emil Ruder – His time and place in history
Symposium 100 Jahre Emil Ruder 2014, Schule für Gestaltung Basel

Richard Hollis places Emil Ruder in the context of typography as it was about 1960. He talks of meetings with him in Basel more than 50 years ago, of Ruder’s foundation in craftsmanship, and his teaching. The importance of Basel, its special contribution to the development of modern typography, is compared with Zurich, and the influence of the journals Graphis and Neue Grafik is discussed. Ruder’s writings both on theory and typographic history are examined, together with the tradition passed on to his students, and the embodiment in practice of his typographic philosophy.
